Kanji Training 0.1
Practice remembering Kanji wherever you go. Kanji Training brings all 2042 Kanji from Heisig's Remembering the Kanji book
to your phone. Take them with you wherever you go.
Features:
All 2042 Kanji from the book
Flashcard like interface - show either Kanji or English keyword and then answer
Kanji grouped by lessons, select which lessons you want to practice. Practice them as you learn them.
Screen shots:
This is how the main screen looks. Kanji is in the centre, the keyword goes below it - which one is shown first depends on selection from the main menu. On top left is the count of Kanji shown so far, and on the top right how many hours:minutes passed from starting the practice.
Above is the Options screen. All Kanji from each part of the book can be selected, or all three can be expanded and individual lessons chosen. On the picture all lessons from 1-12 are selected, and some of the lessons from 13-19.
Compatibility:
Should work with most modern phones with Java support.
Tested with mine Nokia 5130 XpressMusic.
Should work with all Nokia S40 and S60 phones - tested with physical phones through Nokia developer site:
5500 Sport,
5730 XpressMusic,
5630 XpressMusic,

Works in Samsung and Sony-Ericsson emulators; however I checked on actual Samsung U600 and it is not working properly.

Learning Japanese ... and Kanji
Couple of months ago I started learning Japanese. I am using Pimsleur Japanese course
and had seen steady progress. Recently I got a hold of Heisig's Remembering the Kanji
and was absolutely amazed. I could not believe how easy it made learning Kanji for me. You can get first part for free, go on, give it a go, you won't regret.
There is actually a whole ... ecosystem, if you will, around the book. For example you can get flash cards for free, or do review for free. You can use rikaichan, a Firefox addon which can help you translate Japanese pages and show you index of each Kanji from the book. Or, if you prefer, you can buy Kanji Study Cards
.
To cut the story short, I started with flashcards, but they felt too cumbersome, and I just could not carry them around with me - there are more then 2000 characters to learn. Since I carry my mobile phone always with me I decided to create a Java application that can be executed on the phone to replace the flashcards. Of course, the application is there to help me review things learned from the book. Application covers all 2042 from the book and I believe it is unique in that respect.
As soon as I find where to host the application I'll return with more news. You can subscribe to the blog's feed so you won't miss the news.
Btw, I'm using Nokia 5310 XpressMusic
, which is relatively powerful phone, but the application should work fine with most modern phones with Java support. Stay tuned.
